Gifts that count...

While I would like to lead a life of fun and frolic, uncomplicated and almost superficial, sometimes I find myself questioning the purpose of everything. While I cannot answer the purpose of life - why are we born? To be a tiny part that completes this cosmos in its own little way? Every man is born with a purpose, we just don't know yet what it is and maybe spend our lifetime finding out?....existential questions, that I have not found easy answers to.

And along comes a time, when I find the need to do something meaningful, a sudden urge to make a small difference in someone's life, an urge I have yielded to a few times in the past, not always. And a wedding gift helped me contribute what little I could while my life moved on, in harmony with several others in a direction that I could not predict, destined by a larger consciousness.

I love receiving gifts, it's just a really pleasant feeling to think that someone spent the time thinking of what you would like and choosing something that they thought would bring a smile to your face. Which is why I am not a big fan of registries - they are practical just not romantic enough for me! Anyway, my bro, L decided that it was high time I did something useful in life and gave me a unique wedding gift - he volunteereed on my behalf to financially support a child's education for life - throught the CAF - Child Aid Foundation.

And now, I sometimes open my cupboard and take another look at Madhu's photograph - he is a bright child - I have a copy of his report card that the director of the organization, Dr.Goswami sent me promptly - he is a bright child indeed and I intend to do what little I can to keep seeing those grades from Madhu...maybe he will grow up to be someone great, someone who will make a difference thousand times more profound than i have made today...

We underestimate the power of money and the impact an amount that may seem to trivial to us could make to someone else's life. Thoughtful work from your brother.

Terrific !

With all the man power we have in Lex, we should spend a little of our time and money doing things that can make a difference to somebody else..Who better than you to make a start ?

I have to be a little immodest here. I supported two kids in my uncle's village from higher secondary all the way to college and both of them (a boy and a girl) are well settled in life and earning decently now. For many years, my brother had contributed to Udavum Karangal and I had also made a one time donation to Kaakkum Karangal, both the times for the education of children. My parents periodically donate for Anna Daanam both to orphanages as well as homes that house seniors who have had nowhere else to go. As a family we routinely also donate clothes and other stuff to different organizations. I want to help as many people as I humanly can but I also have ideas to bring the whole business of charity into a more organized stream, a la, "United Way" :-)

why is it that we believe that every man has a purpose?we need a purpose, that's why we believe that every man has a purpose...sometimes i think the search for meaning contains in itself the meaning...

sen - true...I think at some level we all think about it, just takes a little bit of initiative to get us going :)

parth - True...while the satisfaction gained by physically volunteering for social good might exceed what we feel by contributing financially...we are still making a difference :)

IBH - Thanks, do spread the word :)

hellboy - Somehow, I did not like About Schmidt much...probably wasnt concentrating enough to catch the deeper meaning :)

dinesh - sweet of you to say that :)

rt - cool, thanks :)

thennavan - kalakku, wonderful initiative!

the monk - deep! Maybe you are right, search for a purpose is just man's way of convincing himself that he exists for a reason more profound than just the sake of existing!

"Purpose of life"

i don't know RS.

4 days back. a friend of mine. all of 26 yrs maybe. just finished his ME. yaarukko gift vaanga velila poirukan. bike accident. spot laye out. the tanker lorry that hit him does not know he is a youth, there is a family in is native waiting for him, there is a sis,mom expecting him etc.

inda life la enna meaning RS? avan edukku vandaan? enna saadhichitomnu poi serndhaan?
enakku therila...

i guess we define if at all there is any perciptible meaning in our lives. its not intrinsically there.

we r just damn lucky. and we r reminded of this fact when we see sudden death at close quarters and see less privileged kids suffering. i think we shud do more to these kids atleast as a gratitude. just for the simple reason that they remind us how lucky we are.

kudos to yr effort!

P~K: Similar thoughts when I hear of such incidents...sometimes we dont realize how lucky we are, do we? Touch wood. I have a feeling I keep revisting this purpose of life thought process!

IBH: Thanks, I guess Indiana was badly affected but we are ok so far.
