but seriously, they serve a dual purpose, men (boys?) find it fun to play with the shredder (almost a gadget) , we get rid of paper-clutter (Fengshui and common sense tells us that's great for the heart :) and we beat identity-theft!

Paper shredders are not fun when you discover tons of paper to shred while moving apartments and end up breaking the shredder because it simply wasn't used to shredding so much paper :-)
Actually Paper shredders are good when you are moving apartments. The shred paper is a good packing material (like say for packing Golu).
